Zero returns: why an empty month still needs a filing
Last checked Oct 26, 2026 from official sources. Not tax advice.
You had no bookings in May. Do you still file? In many counties, yes.
- Clackamas County, OR requires the monthly lodging tax report even in zero months.
- Nevada County, CA says returns "must be filed each quarter even if no tax is due" for registered operators.
Why it matters: a missing return can be treated as late even when no tax is due, and repeated misses can flag your registration. A zero return usually takes two minutes.
How to stay on top of it: put every due date on your calendar for the whole year at once. Monthly counties are usually due the 15th or the end of the following month; quarterly counties often use Apr 30, Jul 31, Oct 31 and Jan 31. Save each confirmation number.
If you've missed some: file them now using the county's late form. Zero returns rarely carry tax, so catching up is often cheap.
